Residents are heroes.

Resident physicians are the unsung superheroes of our healthcare system. After completing years of rigorous medical training, they step into hospitals and clinics with unwavering dedication, caring for patients during some of their most vulnerable moments. At the same time, they work long hours, balancing the demands of their busy work schedule and rarely have time to take care of themselves.

ACGME rules already mandate that residents are given the opportunity to attend medical appointments, including those scheduled during working hours. But many times residents are so dedicated to their training, that they do not feel comfortable leaving to take care of themselves. In fact, one study done by UT-Southwestern found that 31% of surveyed internal medicine and family medicine residents had not seen a primary care physician during their training.

This is where the Residency Checkup Project comes in. We want to create a culture among residents that inspires them to take control of their own health, the same way they encourage their patients to take control of theirs.

As a resident spouse, I believe this can have a profound impact on making residency a more enjoyable time for all.
